What is the Relation Between Religion and Science?

“Science would be insignificant and on the whole meaningless if the world was deprived of order.”

“Through science, we can get to know Allah since science is but an understanding of causes, effects, of relations and natural forces, and knowing nature is one of the most important means to know Allah.”

“We must remember that science is but a whole range of attempts made by men to discover causes, effects…”

“Science is nothing but a search to understand the order existing in nature.”

– Dr. Muhammad Jawad Bahonar

Many times when religion is discussed where the timeless debate of religion versus science is mentioned. But the fact this debate exists in the first place indicates that people do not truly understand what science is.
There are rules in nature which govern absolutely everything, from the orbit of the earth to the sunrise and sunset everyday. When we learn “science”, we are learning about these laws, discovering and observing them – NOT creating them. For example, if we study the concept of evaporation, it is simply a phenomenon that exists in nature and we as human beings are trying to understand it. But Who created this phenomenon?

So, science is closely related to religion in that it studies the laws, causes and effects of nature which are all created by God. Because Allah created such an organised and intricately calculated world, science can exist. Without all of Allah’s creation, science would be meaningless.

Therefore it is never a matter of “science vs religion”, rather, without a religious belief in God, science loses it’s meaning.
