The Effects of Political Modernisation on Baghdad – PDF

Dr. Iman Alattar graduated with her PhD from the University of Tasmania in 2014 with a thesis titled: Textual Representation of the Socio-urban History of Baghdad in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries.

Based on her thesis, she has published her first book titled: Baghdad: An Urban History Through the Lens of Literature, and is currently working on her second book. She has also published many academic papers and participated in several conferences, and is highly esteemed by her colleagues for her unique and enriching research work which is unlike none other in her field.

She is very passionate about urban literature, history, Islamic studies and how these relate to her beloved home city of Baghdad.

This deeply insightful academic paper focuses on how political intervention in Baghdad shaped its urban fabric and how the concept of ‘modernisation’ may not be as glamorous as it sounds; rather it attempts to distance the society from core Islamic practices and replace it with secularism. Dr. Alattar presents solutions to the problems of  ‘political modernisation’ not only for the city of Baghdad, but can be applied globally.

We thank Dr. Alattar for giving us permission to publish her work on our website. Kalima Institute is honoured to share this unique research paper, and pray that you find benefit in reading it inshaAllah.
