“Freedom is not officially assigned, nor is freedom given. It is just like a spring that erupts from the depths of the earth to impose itself. The spring, when it erupts, does not ask for the opinion of anyone, and does not accept any opposition from a fertile or dry land. The spring gives because giving is the secret of its existence. And, the sun provides light, warmth, heat and life because that is the secret of its existence .

And the human being is so because of his humanity which is rooted in his freedom; the freedom to say ‘no’ in situations where ‘no’ is your ideology even if the whole world says ‘yes’. And freedom is to say ‘yes’ when that is your belief despite the whole world saying ‘no’.

It is not a matter of being selfish, but a matter of being human. Listen to the world; one person thinks in a certain way so you discuss his ideas, and another thinks in a certain way so you discuss his ideas also. Then you can generate your ideas through your intellectual abilities. And that is why, to be human is equal to being free.”

“الحرية لا تصدر بمرسوم، والحرية لا تعطى. انها تماماً كالينبوع الذي يتفجر من أعماق الأرض ليفرض نفسه، فالينبوع عندما يتفجر لا يأخذ رأي هذا ولا يأخذ رأي ذاك، ولا يتقبل أي اعتراض من أرض جديبة هنا أو أرض خصبة هناك. هو يعطي لأن العطاء سر ذات الينابيع.

والشمس تعطي النور والدفء والحرارة والحياة لأن ذلك سرّها. والإنسان في إنسانيته التي تمثلها حريته، حرية أن تقول لا عندما تكون ال لا فكرك حتى لو قال العالم نعم، وأن تقول نعم لو كانت ال نعم فكرك حتى لو قال العالم كله لا.

ليست المسألة أن تكون أنانياً ولكن المسألة أن تكون إنسانياً. استمع الى العالم، هذا يفكر بطريقة وتناقش تفكيره، وذاك يفكر بطريقة وتناقش تفكيره، ثم تحاول أن تؤصل فكرك من خلال ما تملك من معطيات الفكر، ولذلك أن تكون إنساناً يساوي أن تكون حرّا”
